Few words about the city of Jajce
Pliva and Vrbas valley was inhabited in ancient times, however, the city of Jajce develops only in the Middle Ages (14th and 15th centuries). The founder of the city is Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić .
According to the travel writers , Vukčić Hrvatinić decided to build a castle of Jajce to the Egg (Castell del Uovo) near Naples , so the town was named Jajce (jajce - small egg). Although, there are some traditions that tell over the masonry fort where the eggs were put in the mortar in order to be stronger, hence the name of the city, there is also a legend that the city was built on a egg-shaped rock .
Today Jajce proudly bears the name - Royal City. Specifically, the last Bosnian king Stjepan Tomasevic was crowned in Jajce in the Church of St. Mary. The church is located in the historic center of the city and its full name is: The Church of St. Mary with the bell tower of St. Luke .
During the Ottoman rule the church turned into a mosque and was named: Sultan-Suleyman Mosque. However , while the facility was used as a place of prayer for Muslims, it repeatedly burned in fires, as locals, understood that as a sign the object cannot change purpose. After the fire in the year 1832, just the walls remained.
